Bison Fellowship – Call for Applications
2026-04-28At Wroclaw Medical University, projects and initiatives are being carried out that not only advance scientific knowledge but also improve the quality of patient care. One area developing particularly dynamically is a modern approach to perinatal care—based on the integration of knowledge from anatomy, biomechanics, and traditional methods.
One example of such activity is the participation of MSc Paulina Mostyńska in the international obstetrics symposium “Elija Sotera,” carried out under a Nanogrant from the “Young Science” program. The event took place on November 7–8, 2025, at the University Hospital in Split and is considered one of the most important scientific meetings for midwives in Croatia.
An integrative approach to stalled labor
During the symposium, MSc Paulina Mostyńska delivered a lecture titled:
“Midwife support in cases of stalled labor progression – an integrative approach: anatomy, biomechanics, and traditional methods.”
In her presentation, she introduced an approach that combines medical knowledge with practical methods of supporting women in labor, taking into account both the physiology of childbirth and the individual needs of the patient.
“In cases of stalled labor progression, a holistic view of the patient is essential. The use of knowledge from anatomy and biomechanics, as well as traditional methods, allows for better support of the natural course of labor and more informed clinical decision-making,” she emphasized.
“Elija Sotera” Symposium – tradition and modernity
The “Elija Sotera” symposium is named after one of the earliest known midwives in the region—a historical figure who lived in the 2nd century in ancient Salona. The event provides a platform for exchanging knowledge and experience among perinatal care specialists.
The organizers included:
- University of Split (Faculty of Health Sciences)
- Croatian Chamber of Midwives
- Clinical Hospital Center Split
The program covered a wide range of topics, including home birth, fear of childbirth, preterm labor, thrombophilia, Rh immunization, and emergency cases in gynecology.
New prospects for international collaboration
The participation of a representative from Wroclaw Medical University also had a strategic dimension. Professor Diana Aranza from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Split expressed interest in developing closer scientific and educational cooperation. In May 2026, she will visit Wroclaw Medical University במסגרת Erasmus STA mobility.
The planned collaboration may include joint development of educational programs for midwifery and nursing, aligning with the growing need to internationalize medical education.
Scientific development and research background
MSc Paulina Mostyńska conducts her research at the Department of Obstetrics at Wroclaw Medical University, led by Dr Monika Przestrzelska, Associate Professor. She is also pursuing her doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Dr habil. Anna Rozensztrauch, Associate Professor, with support from assistant supervisor Dr Anna Prokopowicz.
Her scientific activity and participation in international events demonstrate how young researchers are advancing a modern, interdisciplinary approach to perinatal care.
The future of perinatal care
An integrative approach to childbirth—combining clinical knowledge with practical support methods—is becoming an increasingly important direction in modern obstetrics.
In the long term, it may contribute to improving the comfort of women in labor, reducing the number of medical interventions, and better tailoring care to the individual course of childbirth—ultimately enhancing the quality of care at one of the most important moments in a woman’s life.
