2025-06-09WMU student wins Sigma test
Jakub Mastalerz, a sixth-year medical student at Wroclaw Medical University, won first place in the “Health and Medicine” category of the national Sigma Challenge competition, beating over 700 students from across Poland.
The Sigma Challenge is a knowledge-based contest for students, with over 2,200 participants competing in six thematic categories. Each contestant solves a timed multiple-choice test of 40 questions. Jakub completed his in just 9.5 minutes — the fastest among top scorers.
“I didn’t prepare specifically — I treated it as a way to test the knowledge I’ve gained during my studies and preparation for the Medical Final Exam.” says Jakub. “The most difficult part? Public health statistics.”
Jakub leads the Student Scientific Circle of Rheumatology and is a co-author of several research papers. He has received the WMU Rector’s Scholarship multiple times. His future plans include a medical career in pediatrics and further scientific development. Outside of medicine, he enjoys birdwatching and sports, which he says helps him clear his mind.
The category’s scientific mentor was Prof. Maciej Banach from the Medical University of Łódź. The competition was organized by XYZ Media Group and PWN Scientific Publishers.
