Nurturing Young Talents
2025-05-26Students and young doctors from Wroclaw Medical University achieved notable success during the 9th edition of the Central European Emergency Medicine (CEEM) Congress, one of the most important events dedicated to emergency medicine, organized by the Polish Society of Emergency Medicine.
Shivika Parmar and Maya Kuczak, sixth-year medical students from the English Division at Wroclaw Medical University, won first place in the student competition with their presentation “Lifestyle Habits.” Supervised by Dr. Goutam Chourasia, they surveyed 118 doctors, analyzing physical activity, diet, sleep patterns, and stress management.
“There is more and more talk in the public sphere about burnout and the lack of work-life balance, but we couldn’t find any data on doctors’ daily habits,” said Shivika Parmar. “We decided to check the situation because doctors’ attitudes affect not only their health but also the quality of their patient care.”
The study revealed surprising findings: dermatologists reported sleep deprivation and elevated stress levels, while surgeons, despite their busy schedules, maintained balanced diets. Emergency medicine doctors showed the most alarming results, struggling with lack of sleep, irregular meals, and high mental stress.
“One of the project’s aims was to identify areas for improvement,” added Parmar. In their conclusions, the students suggested practical measures such as nap breaks during long shifts, better meal options, and greater psychological support. “It would also be valuable for the hospital to provide healthy meals or regular breaks for eating,” emphasized Maya Kuczak.

In the young doctors’ session, resident physicians from the Emergency Medicine Clinic of the University Clinical Hospital — Dr. Konrad Brzozowski, Dr. Wojciech Środa, and Dr. Bartosz Tomczyk — were also recognized for their innovative presentations. Their projects, supervised by Dr. Janusz Sokołowski, Dr. Goutam Chourasia, and Prof. Tomasz Jurek, included a case study titled “Emergency Radiology – when the surgeon can wait,” describing early-stage management of massive intra-abdominal bleeding, developed in collaboration with Prof. Maciej Guziński’s team from University Clinical Hospital.
The remarkable results achieved by students and residents highlight Wroclaw Medical University’s high scientific standards and commitment to excellence.
