At Wroclaw Medical University, projects supporting the development of young researchers are implemented already at the student stage. The nanogrant program within the “Young Science” initiative enables students to acquire skills that directly improve the quality of their research.
One such project is “Medical Statistics Competency Development for Wroclaw Medical University Student.” Thanks to this initiative, Krzysztof Kraik, a medical student, was able to participate in the specialized Medical Statistics Program organized by Stanford School of Medicine as part of the Stanford Center for Health Education.
“I decided to take part in the course because I had been planning for some time to expand my knowledge of statistics, especially in a medical context. The course was recommended to me by Dr. hab. Angelika Chachaj from the Department of Angiology and Internal Diseases, with whom I have been collaborating scientifically for over a year and a half. Thanks to the nanogrant program, I had the opportunity to attend this course,” says Krzysztof Kraik.
Statistics in Medical Research
Modern medicine increasingly relies on data analysis. The proper use of statistical methods not only allows for accurate interpretation of research results but also enhances the reliability of scientific conclusions.
Participation in the course enabled the student to gain practical skills in medical data analysis and in using statistical tools.
“The most important competencies I gained during the course are the ability to independently perform statistical data analysis and to use R software, which is widely applied in statistical computing. Thanks to the course, I can also better interpret research results and I am more aware of their limitations and the ‘pitfalls’ associated with statistics,” he explains.
Greater Independence in Research Work
The knowledge gained allows Krzysztof Kraik to independently analyze research data and prepare results for publication more efficiently.
“Thanks to the knowledge I have acquired, I can independently carry out statistical analyses of data collected during the research projects I am involved in. This eliminates the need to wait for others to perform the analysis, which translates into more efficient scientific work and a shorter time between conducting research and publishing results. Additionally, the course has improved my ability to visualize data using graphs,” he emphasizes.
A Direction for Future Development
Today, statistical literacy is one of the key elements of a young researcher’s toolkit.
“In my opinion, knowledge of statistics significantly facilitates scientific work. It is useful not only for analyzing one’s own data but also for interpreting the results of other researchers. It also allows for greater independence in conducting research,” the student notes.
In the future, Krzysztof Kraik plans to continue his scientific career.
“I would like to apply to the Doctoral School at Wroclaw Medical University. In the near future, I plan to use the knowledge I have gained to analyze data from research conducted within several student research groups. This will allow me to consolidate my skills and gain experience that will be valuable at later stages of my career,” he adds.
Projects carried out under the “Young Science” program help students at Wroclaw Medical University develop research competencies and better prepare for their future scientific careers.
