2026-02-27Wroclaw Medical University (UMW) has been awarded €259,000 in funding under the Horizon Europe programme for its participation in the international project “Multimodal Digital TWINs with Generative AI for eXplainable Precision Medicine” (TWIN-X). The consortium, composed of 19 institutions and led by Klinikum der Technischen Universität München, secured nearly €15 million in total. UMW is the only Polish partner in the initiative.
The 48-month project aims to develop interactive “digital twins” of patients—primarily oncology patients—powered by generative artificial intelligence. These digital models will integrate multimodal medical data, including radiology, pathology, clinical records, laboratory results and even socio-environmental factors, to advance explainable precision medicine.
At Wroclaw Medical University, the project is coordinated by Dr Paweł Gajdzis from the Department of Clinical Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with Prof. Piotr Donizy. Using resources from the University Clinical Hospital, the UMW team will collect and analyse pathological data from cancer patients, particularly those with gastrointestinal and lung malignancies, contributing to the creation of clinically coherent, modular digital patient models.
The TWIN-X platform will enable researchers to explore “what-if” simulations, compare therapeutic strategies and analyse counterfactual clinical scenarios—such as how disease progression might differ under alternative treatment pathways. A strong emphasis is placed on transparency and explainability: users will have access to source data and concise, verifiable justifications generated from structured information rather than free-form AI outputs.
By enabling hypothesis testing and scientific validation without direct patient involvement, the project is expected to accelerate the generation of reliable research findings and support the development of more effective clinical guidelines. Participation in Horizon Europe projects significantly strengthens UMW’s research evaluation profile and enhances its international visibility.
