The project of the Student Research Group of Surgical Nursing and Wound Care at Wroclaw Medical University received funding as part of the municipal Fund for Student Activity (FAST) competition. The funds obtained will be used to compare the effectiveness of various non-pharmacological methods in reducing pain in patients during dressing changes.
The study will utilize VR goggles, aromatherapy, and music therapy. The project’s goal is to evaluate the impact of these tools on patients’ perceived pain and to identify the most effective method among those examined.
‘This topic is critical to us because finding effective, non-pharmacological methods of treating pain reduces the risk of adverse drug reactions, especially in long-term treatment,’ says Monika Zawistowska, chair of the WMU Surgical Nursing and Wound Care SRG. “Such methods also support a holistic approach to patients, strengthening their sense of control and potentially enhancing the effectiveness of treatment.
The research group will consist of patients with venous ulcers, diabetic foot syndrome, and other vascular-related wounds. The study will be conducted in several stages and in multiple locations to obtain the most accurate results possible.
VR glasses enable users to experience virtual reality by stimulating multiple senses simultaneously. The participants will be shown images whose relaxing and pain-relieving properties have been demonstrated in scientific studies.
During aromatherapy, certified, natural essential oils with a calming effect will be diffused. Meanwhile, patients will hear sounds through multimedia headphones during the dressing change procedure. The research group will consist of patients with venous ulcers, diabetic foot syndrome, and other vascular wounds.
‘We believe that the results obtained will enable us to improve the quality of care for patients, and ultimately change the approach to pain treatment,’ summarises Monika Zawistowska.
The project is overseen by Dr Izabela Kuberka from the Department of Nursing at the WMU Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.
