
Graduate of WMU wins the Wroclaw Magnolia Award

An innovative method of treating psoriasis
2025-07-28Marta Szepietowska and Maciej Tota, medical students from Wroclaw Medical University (UMW), were named among the top 10 winners of the nationwide “Rising Stars of Polish Medicine” contest, securing 2nd and 3rd place respectively. This was the first edition of the competition organized by Puls Medycyny, highlighting outstanding 5th- and 6th-year medical students for their impressive scientific and social achievements.
Marta Szepietowska, a 6th-year student, has co-authored 27 scientific papers with a total impact factor close to 90, contributed to book chapters, and presented at numerous conferences. She gained international clinical experience in Spain and Mexico, and currently conducts research on acne, mental health among dermatology patients, and stigma related to skin diseases. Her projects include the FAST study on stigma and alexithymia in acne patients, supported by the Wroclaw Academic Center, as well as “Najlepsi z Najlepszych 4.0”, funded by the Ministry of Education and Science. She has received multiple prestigious scholarships, including twice from the Minister of Health.
Maciej Tota, also a 6th-year student, has published 15 peer-reviewed papers with a combined impact factor of 68.6, focusing on IgA nephropathy, atopic dermatitis, asthma, and skin cancers. He actively participates in student research, recently working on new biomarkers for Merkel cell carcinoma. Maciej has won awards at national conferences, such as 2nd place at the XVIII Zabrze Student Cardiology Conference, and is involved in student organizations like IFMSA-Poland, where he coordinated the “Marrow Hero” project.
