Young UMW Scientists Awarded START Fellowships
2025-05-27Four student research projects from Wroclaw Medical University (UMW) have received funding through the City of Wrocław’s FAST program. Leading the ranking was a proposal from the Student Neurology Society, focused on developing a VR-based rehabilitation tool for stroke patients with spatial neglect syndrome.
The interdisciplinary project will combine expertise from UMW, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, and tech student societies like VisionARy and Signum. It aims to create therapeutic VR games that adapt to each patient’s abilities using EEG (brain activity monitoring) and eye-tracking technologies.
— Early post-stroke rehabilitation can be more effective due to the brain’s heightened plasticity. Our goal is to make recovery faster and more personalized, says Sylwiusz Knotek, project coordinator.
The tool is expected to improve attention and motor function and could be used even before patients are fully mobile. The project will be completed by the end of 2025.
Three other UMW student groups also received grants — in cardiology, pharmaceutical microbiology, and surgical nursing — with more details to follow in upcoming articles.
